LHS WELCOMES THE PRIME MINISTER The Australian Government’s 7th Community Cabinet meeting was held recently at Lambton High School as part of the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s commitment to ensure close consultation with the Australian people on national or local matters that concern them.
For the Australian Government it was another scheduled meeting, but for Lambton High School, it was much more, a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school, strengthen our community partnerships and provide leadership opportunities for our students.
We played a critical role in planning the event with the Prime Minister’s advisers, the Dignity Protection Coordination officer from the Attorney-General’s Department, Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics officers, and the NSW Police Force. Numerous scheduled three hour meetings, walk throughs, action plans, serious incident briefings, contract agreements and endless phone calls and emails had become an additional role. The level of planning, the support and professionalism of staff at Lambton High School and the commitment the students gave in preparing and rehearsing for the event ensured a successful Cabinet meeting. Mr Rudd was very obliging and willing to engage in conversation with community members, staff and students.
As Principal of the school I was honoured to play a key role in the event as the master of ceremonies. It is not very often you are presented with an opportunity to highlight the great attributes of Lambton High School to such an important audience.

REGIONAL WIN FOR YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALISTS
On the 14th and 15th of October, The Lambton High School Envirothon Team, consisting of Leah Serafim, Sarah Giles, Callum Borwell and Caitlyn Read, competed in the Hunter Region Envirothon held in Dungog. The Envirothon is an environmental competition, where teams from various schools compete against each other in a series of environmental challenges which are set up as stations, designed to test skills and knowledge. The focus of the challenge was the proposed Tillegra Dam. For the first time, the Envirothon was held over the course of two days. Wangat Lodge was the accommodation overnight, where trivia and frog-spotting activities kept us busy. During the actual competition, the teams had to conduct water quality tests, riparian zone evaluations, mapping exercises, fauna investigations and interviews of community members. Following this, each team gave a presentation, detailing the finding from their investigations and answering the focus question of the challenge. The Lambton High School Envirothon team won the competition, making us State finalists. We will represent the Hunter Region in the State Envirothon, held on 10th ,11th and 12th December.
We’d like to thank Mrs Hayden for the opportunity and for all her time and effort. We’d also like to thank Hunter Water and the Wetlands Centre for making this unique experience possible.
