Authentic Assessment

Authentic assessment measures student achievement in a way that is close to a real-life situation as the testing process allows. It is a type of assessment that requires the students to directly demonstrate a particular behaviour or set of skills. Authentic assessments have four common characteristics which separates them from traditional forms of testing (Wiggins, 1989).

  • They are designed to be truly representative of performance in the field
  • The criteria used in assessment seek to evaluate "essentials" of performance against well-articulated performance standards.
  • Self assessment plays an important role in authentic tasks. A major role of authentic assessment is to help students develop the capacity to evaluate their own work.
  • Students are often expected to present their work publicly and orally.

At Lambton High School, authentic assessment activities take place at both whole school and classroom level.
