About The Project : Becoming a Better Learner

The Year 8 project is a compulsory task at Lambton High School.All year 8 students do it as part of completing Stage 4 and it is one aspect of the Lambton High School Assessment for Learning Project (ALP).

The reasons for having a year 8 project at LHS include:

  • to increase opportunities for students to reflect on the process of learning
  • to further engage and motivate year 8 students in the process of learning
  • to publicly share what they have learned about themselves as learners especially how they have made progress as independent and reflective learners
  • to provide an opportunity for students to present their learning in a more authentic way and therefore support the ALP
  • to further develop the thinking skills and study skills as developed in the year 7 Mastermind program
  • to enhance lifelong learning skills of all students especially in the area of the Key Competencies
  • to have positive impact on the culture of learning in year 8

Student Outcomes

Students will

  • Be more responsible in their own learning and move towards becoming more independent and reflective learners
  • Develop the skills associated in developing and presenting at a public forum
  • Increase their understandings of key concepts associated with:
    • research skills
    • Self-assessment
    • Reflection of own learning
    • Study Skills
  • Increase skills in the use of key competencies including:
    • collecting, analyzing and organizing information
    • communicating ideas and information
    • planning and organizing activities
    • working with others
    • solving problems
    • using technology
    • interviewing
    • reflection writing

What do students do in the project?

As part of the the project, students will be involved in a number of reflective activities regarding their classwork in the various subjects. The project culminates with a panel intewrview in term 4. The project is a compulsory task at LHS that all year 8 students do as part of completing Stage 4.Activities include:

  • Subject Reflection Journal Enteries
  • Prescribed Subject-Based Assignment Tasks
  • Goal Setting
  • Learning PortfolioStudy/Learning Skills
  • Oral Presentation/Interview
  • Opportunities will be given to all students during the year to develop interview skills prior to the formal interview in term 4
